Friends of Long Beach Animal Shelter was incorporated as a nonprofit public benefit corporation on January 12, 1990 in the State of California, and is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Federal Tax ID Number 33-0390886). In 2002, the organization filed a dba as Friends of Long Beach Animals.

STATE OF THE FRIENDS 2008

Loyal members, volunteers, dedicated Board members, and those who supported our fundraisers –THANK YOU!  As a result of your generosity, we have been able to accomplish the following during 2008:

1. SNIP (Spaying/Neutering):  In 2008, we paid $108,237 for the spaying/neutering of 2,005 animals (883 cats, 1,117 dogs and 5 rabbits).   Over the past 10-1/2 years, we have paid $635,983 for the spaying/neutering of 8,917 cats, 6,026 dogs, 118 rabbits and one hamster (15,062 animals in total since July 1, 1998).  You and we are preventing millions of animals from being born, only to be euthanized or subjected to cruelty.

2. Humane Education:  In 2001, Long Beach Unified School District certified our humane education classes.  Since that time, 38,570 students have participated in this program free to the schools, at Friends’ expense of $108,744.  In 2008, the tally was $19,098 for 4,204 students.  Included in 2008 are 1,729 new books and other educational tools donated to local schools and libraries to further our humane education goals.

3. Adoptions:  We have rescued and placed 25 homeless pets in 2008.  Most were exhibited at Wiskers on 2nd Street and at Bixby Animal Clinic on Atlantic Ave.  Over the years we have been able to adopt out a total of 124 rescued cats for placement into permanent, loving homes.  In view of the fact that we are not a rescue organization, but a spay/neuter and humane education organization, this is a great accomplishment.   We paid $3,740 in adoption expenses to further our adoption goals.

4. Special Medical Bills for Shelter Animals:  We provided $880 for life-saving medicine and vet care for special needs of pets in the care of Long Beach Animal Control.  We continue to provide Rymidal so no animal has to suffer with pain while impounded, and Advantage and Frontline to keep pets free of fleas while in the care of Animal Care Services.  In addition, there is “Tippy,” a canine who arrived at the shelter with a shattered leg, beyond repair.  Our expenditures for Tippy in 2008 totaled $195 for special food and treats for Tippy, who is the on-site three-legged canine mascot at LBAC, much loved by the LBACS staff and FOLBA.

5. Shelter Assistance – At a cost of $3,748 we provided memorial garden supplies, rabbit cages, lariats, training collars, kennel cards, 3 cameras, 120 KONG toys, cat woofle toys, and after a tough 2007, an appreciation event to recognize the difficult but great job by our Animal Control Services staff.

6. Community Events – Veterans Parade and Belmont Shore Christmas Parade.

7. Three Fundraisers – A Virtual WALK for the Animals, a Long Beach Playhouse benefit and an Adult SNL (Sunday Night Live) grossed $20,053 thanks to your support.  Your participation at these events allows us to fund our programs aggressively.
